Ebony's thoughts returned to Slick.

Where the hell is that damn fool? I hope he ain’t drunk again? I sure don’t want to take a cab to all my dates tonight.

She needed Slick to drive her to her dates, or at least she needed his car. Taking a cab cut into her nights profits, and was not an option. Even if a generous trick wanted to pay for the cab, she figured those dollars could go into her pocket.

She knew Slick, a long time friend, liked her. He once tried to talk her into letting him be her pimp. He would try anything to get close to her — spend a little time with her.

"Fool, don't you know the age of the pimp, has, more or less, passed, and besides, I don't need no man to take care of my money. I only need you to hold it while I am turning my tricks, and you know I pays your ass for your help, so cut the crap," she replied, on one occasion, to his offer of becoming her pimp. That was the last time he mentioned anything about them getting together. But she knew he still liked her a lot. She used his longing for her to get what she wanted from him. He would drive her anywhere she wanted. And, although, he never asked for it, she always gave him a stipend for gas. His only problem was he was often late picking her up — mostly because he was drunk.

If that man causes me to miss another trick, I'm going to fire his wana-be pimp, butt, she thought, and this time she meant it, as she turned to see the belligerent young men had received their orders, and were leaving the diner. The rejected youth who tried to talk to her, gave her one last glance, as he left.

That’s right, keep on moving, she thought.
